Five Chinese Industry Alliances Join Hands
May 14, 2010
China's WAPI (WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure) industry alliance recently revealed that the alliance jointly entered into a strategic agreement with four other Chinese industry alliances, including the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) industry alliance, the AVS (Audio Video Coding Standard) industry alliance, the Zhongguancun industry alliance in IOT (Internet of Things) and the broadband wireless industry alliance, the Sohu IT News reported on May 11. Under the agreement, these industry alliances will collaborate in various areas in terms of standard, technology, product, and market development to ensure the interoperability between the WAPI and other standard groups, including the IOT, according to the same source.

With currently approximately 70 members, the WAPI industry alliance is an organization dedicated to the promotion of China's own-developed WAPI standard for WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) that control access permission between a wireless device and the access point. To date, China's government still insists that mobile phones, to be sold in China, should support both Wi-Fi (Wireless-Fidelity) and WAPI.
